My father, a calm reflective man, was a good storyteller. His were not fairy tales but were details of his experiences in Nazi Europe. I was his willing audience, fascinated by what he had to say. I grew up listening to snippets from his life. His narratives came out in spurts, sometimes interrupted, sometimes ending prematurely, often broken off and not finished until later. He spoke of horrific experiences: brutal, devastating, incomprehensible. The stories etched themselves into my mind. There was no chronology, I had to figure that out later. But there was something about how my father described the events: the vignettes created striking mental images. I pictured each incident in vivid detail. In my imagination I was right there at his side living every moment that happened. I was my father's witness. He drew me in. He shared his life with me. I always knew I would set his story down on paper. In fact, I had one of his depositions translated y ears ago. Yet, this was only one part of the family story. There was so much more to tell.
